Insulated glass also known as double glazing is a double or triple glazed window separated by an air or other gas space to reduce heat transfer through a part of the building envelope.

Glass in windows is used to provide light and to allow side-to-side visibility. Although the composition and manufacturing process of glass have been discussed elsewhere, for the purposes of this article, the importance of glass to a building’s structure lies in its dimensional stability over a wide temperature range.

Insulated glass specifications

Insulating glass is manufactured with glass thicknesses ranging from 3mm to 10mm or more in special applications. Laminated or toughened glass may also be used as part of the structure. Most units are manufactured with the same glass thickness used on both panes but special applications such as sound reduction or security may require a combination of different thicknesses within the same unit. To reduce shearing effects on the sealed unit (a major cause of premature failure), manufacturers use a general rule of thumb that allows a 1mm difference between the panes of glass used in the unit and still maintain the warranty on the unit. For example, a unit may be ordered with 4mm glass on the outside and 3mm glass on the inside. These variations are permitted for architectural and cost reasons. Other combinations may be specified and manufactured but the manufacturer may reserve the right to limit the warranty period or refuse to cover the entire unit.
